Black-shouldered Kite, and others by the still waters

It felt a bit dicey walking from the roadway across these dried grasses; deeper than it looks, and who knows what's underfoot?! Thinking s-n-a-k-e.

Can you see the little white dot on top of the Casuarinas, in the middle trees?

it's a Black-shouldered Kite

now I've forgotten what might be lurking in the grasses

and on the other side of those trees was this lovely waterway

a little Australasian Grebe was way out enjoying the last of the sun for the day

further along

with the Watagan Mountains backdrop

another nearby location to the previous

looking downstream

 Pacific Black Duck

Purple Swamp Hen to the left with Black Swans and Pacific Black Duck

I can just see a dash of red behind the reeds to the right of middle, where the Purple Swamp Hen is walking

Location: Quorrobolong

Love your sunny day pictures Carole and I don't wish to worry you, but there was a reason the kite was watching the long grass! Only joking.

What an amazingly calm day, Carole, and your patience rewarded with these beautiful pics.

This looks a beautiful wetland area and with lots of birds. The kite is a beauty and the black swan's reflection.

Hi Carole Stunning photos. Scenery fantastic, I want to go there! Glad you pointed out the 'dot' on the tree, would have missed that! However you did get a great shot of the kite in the end. Well down. Love all those ducks and Swans, even the P Swamphen.

gorgeous shots of the Black-shouldered Kite. It was on my wishlist for the Moroccan trip I was on last nov. The gusy said we saw it but i only saw a dark dot far off at the horizon. :( Was soo dissappoined. Thanks for sharing this stunning bird.

I am amazed at your bravery walking through this thick grass, and no wonder you were thinking "snake". I have some tall rubber boots that i wear when I am walking through something like this, and hope that you do too. No wonder though that you forgot about what could be lurking here when you got the shots of this amazing kite. Beautiful photos Carole!!! Was this with your new camera??

Fantastic series for SkyWatch. The shots off the birds were great and loved the Black-shouldered Kite and the Black Swan particularly. Happy SkyWatch Friday!

thanks everyone for your comments! To Jeanne: well ..no I don't have tall rubber boots, perhaps I should get a pair, not especially for the rain but snake-bite proof. I did pick up a tic last weekend so the unexpected is always lurking. Yes I only use the new camera Jeanne; the very reason for getting it was to save having to keep feeding AA's into the old one, as much as I loved it otherwise, I was only using it for long/zoom shots and that used a lot of battery power. This new camera I only need to plug it into the power of course to re-charge.
